Cheela Toast

Did you know French Toast never originated in France? Did you know the origin of Cheela Toast? Well, never mind. Let’s focus on making it. Totally vegan and great for diabetic* folks, chickpea toast is one of the easiest bread recipes.

Cheela Toast

Ingredients

  • 6-7 Modern Family Special Bread slices
  • 1 small cup chickpea powder (besan)
  • 5 tbsps. Refined oil
  • ½ tsp. Salt
  • ½ tsp. Black pepper
  • 1 tsp. Jeera powder (cumin seed powder)
  • Optional- 1 tsp. Chilli flakes or red chilli powder
  • Optional- I tsp. White sesame seeds

Method

  1. Mix dry ingredients with chickpea powder in a bowl. Add water and whisk smoothly. There should be no lumps in the batter. Keep batter’s consistency medium. (Neither too watery nor too thick)
  2. Heat one tbsp. oil for frying in a tawa or a frying pan.
  3. Dip bread in the batter for few seconds. Place on tawa. Let it cook for a minute.
  4. Flip the bread. Cook for another minute. Keep flipping and fry a couple of times to get evenly fried and brown sides.
  5. Keep stove on medium or low flame to avoid charring the cheela bread. Serve hot with tomato ketchup.

Please ensure stove is on medium or low flame else your cheela bread might get charred. Serve hot with tomato ketchup. Enjoy with any hot or cold beverage.
